These vintage wood containers from Ukraine are beautifully hand painted and have all been carved by hand. Wood carving (різблення художне; rizblennia khudozhne) is a major decorative art in Ukraine and has been done for many centuries. Common people would carve wooden plates, spoons, bowls, canes, boxes, furniture, cards, sleds, gates, beams, and gables. The flowers covering the vessels are known as a form of Petrykivka painting.This decorative art form has distinctive features of flower patterns and brush techniques. This Ukrainian decorative painting style used to decorate house walls and everyday household items. The earliest known examples date from the 18th century, but it continues to thrive and develop as a modern art form.
