Sub rosa (Neo-Latin for ‘under the rose’) denotes secrecy or confidentiality. The rose has an ancient history as a symbol of secrecy. In Hellenistic and Roman mythology, Cupid gave a rose to Harpocrates (the Hellenistic god of silence). So that he would not reveal the secrets of Venus. Banquet rooms were decorated with rosecarvings. A reminder that discussions should be kept in confidence. Inherited later in religious symbolism and carved on confessionals to signify that the conversations would remain secret. The phrase entered the German language (unter der Rose) and later English.
Intaglio is the art of carving a design into precious gemstones, so that all the design remains below the surface. Opposite of ‘relief’ sculpture like Cameos, that can produce an imprint when pressed into heated sealing wax. An engraved gemstone was a valued possession and would only have belonged to someone of great wealth and importance. Warm to the touch and alleged to contain the very essence of life itself. People believed Amber “pulled out” diseases from the body and “attracted” good luck. Much in the way it attracts dust when rubbed. The ancient Greeks noted this ability to generate static electricity and called Amber “elektron”.
