These wonderful vintage matryoshka checkers and board are so darn cute! These tiny Russian dolls are made of wood that has been beautifully painted by hand and they all fit inside the hand made wooden checker board box.
This marvellous Russian toy should be considered a cult object for its specific construction and design perfect for concealing spells and secrets. Representing family, these dolls have also come to embody the spirit of women. Traditionally they were painted to reflect the attire and characteristics of peasant women, celebrating their strength, resilience, and nurturing qualities.
Traditionally carved from Birch wood which is sacred wood believed to drive off evil spirits, the evil eye, and offer protection.
NOTE: The dolls do not open up and 4 dolls are missing from the set.
