Magic of Prayer Offering Plate ~ Vintage
Original price was: CAD $165.00.CAD $100.00Current price is: CAD $100.00.
This beautiful Magic of Prayer Offering Plate ~ Vintage is perfect for offerings in your ritual space or on your altar. Featuring stylized Rushnyk embroidery symbols covering it all around. Most people in the Ukrainian Canadian community are familiar with these Ukrainian- style ceramics. Items like platters, mugs, borshch bowls, and varenyky casseroles can be found. All of them strategically adorned with red, white, and black simulated embroidery design decals.
The “embroidery” patterns on these ceramics look like typical, intricate Ukrainian cross-stitch patterns. Prior to the 90s, only a few floral embroidery decals could be found adorning ceramic statues, candles, or busts of the Holy Mother or Christ Jesus. Dr. Robert Klymasz, folklorist and retired curator from the Canadian Museum of Civilization, coined an appropriate slogan, calling them “Ukrainian logos.” In North America (especially in the early years), they have become emblematic of Ukrainian Canadian identity.
The plate reads
“The Magic of Prayer ~ When the trials of this life make you weary. And your troubles seem too much to bear, There’s a wonderful solace and comfort In the silent communion of prayer. From the magic of prayer there comes power That will minimise all of your care. And you’ll gather new hope when you’re able to cope With the troubles that once brought despair.”
“Dvoeverie”—”double-belief” or “dual faith”—is a highly influential concept in Slavic studies, to describe the conscious or unconscious preservation of pagan beliefs and/or rituals by Christian communities (generally as a syncretic faith containing Christian and pagan elements; a form of peasant/female resistance to elite/patriarchal Christianity; or two independent belief-systems held concurrently).
