Jewish Zodiac Votive Candle Holder ~ Antique
CAD $125.00
This antique zodiac brass holder fits votive candles. I will say I wonder if this may be a Kiddush cup thats missing an insert? but I dont know forsure. I have never seen anything like it before and I cannot find any information, it is truly a unique piece.
Astrology has been a topic of debate among Jews for over 2000 years. While not a Jewish practice or teaching, astrology made its way into Jewish thought. This can be seen in the many references to it in the Talmud. Astrological statements became accepted and worthy of debate and discussion by Torah scholars. Opinions varied: some rabbis rejected the validity of astrology; others accepted its validity but forbid practicing it; still others thought its practice to be meaningful and permitted. In modern times, as science has rejected the validity of astrology, many Jewish thinkers have similarly rejected it; though some continue to defend the pro-astrology views that were common among pre-modern Jews.
In pre-modern Hebrew, astrology was known as hokmat ha-mazalot (חוכמת המזלות), “the science of the constellations”.
Beautiful patina you can clean & polish it if you wish, personally I think it adds character. Please remember that these are vintage so some may have some minor scuffs.
Candles, candlesticks, and chambersticks have been used in religious rituals and spiritual means serving as both functional and symbolic lights.
Only 1 when it’s gone its gone!
