Birch Spray

Description

Birch is associated with exorcisms, healing, new beginnings, purification, protection, creativity, and birth. Known as ‘The Lady of the Woods’ the twigs were used to bestow fertility on cattle and newlyweds. Children’s cradles were made from its wood. It is a known pain reliever and can be used to treat arthritis.

Representing renewal, rebirth and new beginnings as it is the first tree after Winter to come into leaf. Branches marked with sigils were carried for protection and given as gifts to newlyweds for fertility. In Wales it is a tree of love. Wreaths would be made out of the branches and twigs and given tokens of love.

Birch rods are used in protection spells and can be carried to keep away curses, crossings, or hexing. The wood was used to make cradles and boughs of birch were hung over the child as it was believed to protect them at night and keep them from being enchanted by the Little People. To ward off the evil eye, tie a red ribbon on the branch of one of these lovely trees. To exorcise people and animals one would gently strike them with the twigs of this tree. Birch is said to protect your home against lightening and it is a tree of new beginnings and new view points.
