Ulysses Butterfly Intaglio Necklace ~ Baltic Amber
Price range: CAD $165.00 through CAD $250.00
In Slavic folklore the butterfly was believed to be the shape assumed by the soul after death. It was thought that vampires were able to appear as butterflies. Echoing an earlier belief of them symbolizing departed souls. When a vampire was impaled, witnesses watched anxiously for the appearance of a butterfly around the grave. This would indicate that the vampire was trying to avoid destruction. Some traditions spoke of “living vampires” or “people with two souls”, a kind of witch capable of leaving its body and engaging in harmful and vampiric activity while sleeping.
Baltic Amber Jewellery is associated with time, cycles, and longevity. As it was once a living substance, it’s related to spirit. These Amulets were worn to avert misfortune, for protection, and to keep one safe from black magic. They cast out devils, guarded against evil eye, brought luck in love, and made the owner stronger and cleverer. Warm to the touch and alleged to contain the very essence of life itself. People believed Baltic Amber “pulled out” diseases from the body and “attracted” good luck. Much in the same way it attracts small objects if you rub it. It has unique properties unlike any other amber in the world, as it contains Succinic Acid, a bio-stimulant and has been used for ages to promote healing.
Intaglio is the art of carving precious gemstones so that all the design remains below the surface. Opposite of ‘relief’ sculpture like Cameos. An engraved gemstone was a valued possession and would only have belonged to someone of great wealth and importance. These baltic amber pieces have been expertly carved in the back to showcase clarity and are a true work of art combining the skills of a Master Carver with those of a Jewellery Smith.
