Pavuk (which means “spider” in Ukrainian) is a traditional geometric mobile with deep roots. These hand-crafted talismans were traditionally made during Christmas time. They were suspended from the ceiling by long horsehair strands and were believed to trap negative energy and bring prosperity, blessings and protection to households. These intricately woven, airy structures with web-like forms are made from harvest straw. They reflect the interconnectedness of community and the cycles of life. The straw mobiles are found in Ukraine, Poland, Belarus, Sweden, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland, Estonia, Norway, Russia, and many other countries.
