The Moon Rabbit, Moon hare or Jade rabbit is a mythical figure in both East Asian and indigenous American folklore. The dark markings on the near side of the Moon is thought to be a rabbit or hare. In East Asian mythology, the rabbit is seen as pounding with a mortar and pestle, but the contents of the mortar differ among Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese folklore

The Chinese rabbit Yutu is a companion of the Moon goddess and constantly pounds the elixir of life for her. In Japanese and Korean versions, the rabbit is pounding ingredients to make mochi or some type of rice cakes. The Vietnamese version the rabbit appears with Hằng Nga and Chú Cuội, and pounds the elixir of immortality. In some Chinese versions, the rabbit pounds medicine for the mortals and some include making of mooncakes. Moon folklore from certain Amerindian cultures of North America also has rabbit themes and characters.

In the late 80’s to late 90’s there was a full-blown fantasy folk art pewter boom. From science centres, to museums, fantasy shops, and even garden centres. These things were everywhere! Dragons coiled around crystals, witches flying through the air, unicorns mid-gallop, fairies, and mermaids.
