Glücksschwein ~ The Good Luck Money Pig

CAD $30.00

During the late 19th century pigs were popular good luck amulets and charms in Europe and were known as Glücksschwein or Geldschwein (“Geld”: money, “Schwein”: pig or good luck) in Germany. Symbolizing good fortune and prosperity, the practice of collecting coins in a “piggy bank” reinforced the association between pigs and wealth. It can also trace it roots back to a time when having a pig meant having a source of food, and it was fortuitous to celebrate New Years feasting on pork, since pigs move forward when foraging, & this forward momentum would carry one into a prosperous new year.

Later pigs made of marzipan would be gifted around the holidays, and pigs were frequently featured on holiday cards, along with other symbols of good luck such as the four leaf clovers, gold coins, horseshoes, and toadstools. Expressions such as ‘happy as a pig in the mire’, ‘a pig in clover’, and ‘you lucky pig’, reflect the association of pigs with happiness, financial prosperity, and good luck.
