Ēostre is depicted by scholars as a fertility goddess and one of dawn and light. She is the namesake of the festival of Easter. Ēostre is attested solely by Bede in his 8th-century work The Reckoning of Time. He states that during Ēosturmōnaþ (the equivalent of April), pagan Anglo-Saxons held feasts in Eostre’s honour. This tradition had died out by his time, and was replaced by the Christian Paschal month. This became a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. In other words, If you can’t beat them, join them.
