It is the soul of the household. And in that house, unseen but never absent, dwelled a Domovik, the house spirit.
In Slavic folklore, every home hosts a Domovik or Domovoi. Believed to embody the soul of one or more deceased family members. This belief integrates him into ancestor worship traditions. Families honoured their Domoviks by creating small icons or figurines made from wood, cloth, or clay. The shrine was usually located in a central part of the home near the stove. They served as focal points for offerings and communing with spirits. People maintained a relationship through regular offerings and rituals.
