Remind me of the babe …
During the 80’s and 90’s dark fantasy was rampant and there was also a full-blown pewter fantasy folk art boom. From science centres, museums, fantasy shops, and even to garden centres you would find pewter dragons coiled around crystals, witches flying through the air, wizards leaning on staffs, unicorns mid-gallop, fairies mid flight, and mermaids wrapped around stones.
In the 1986 film Labyrinth, David Bowie’s character “performs” contact manipulation with crystal balls. This magical pewter hand and beautiful mini crystal ball reminds me of that time and of course David Bowie. Often interpreted as a coming-of-age story, it explores themes of growing up and taking responsibility. The film also delves into the loss of innocence and the challenges of transitioning from childhood to adulthood.
Crystal gazing or Crystalomancy was a popular pastime in the Victorian era, and was claimed to work best when the Sun is at its northernmost declination. Immediately before the appearance of a vision, the ball was said to mist up from within. A crystal ball, also known as an orbuculum, is a crystal or glass ball and common fortune telling object. It is generally associated with divination, clairvoyance and scrying in particular.
WARNING // When not in use keep out of sunlight and cover the crystal ball with a cloth as it can be a potential fire hazard. The clear crystal ball will act like a magnifying glass and can start a fire.
