Description

Cicadas are often associated with themes of resurrection and immortality in mythology, particularly in ancient Greek and Chinese cultures. They symbolize rebirth due to their life cycle, where they emerge from underground after many years, and are featured in various myths and folklore as symbols of spiritual realization and inspiration.

The earliest documented examples of cicada folklore come from China, where carvings of the bug date to 1500 BCE. Cicadas would be carved out of jade and placed on a corpse’s tongue before burial. It was then imagined that those deceased individuals would similarly emerge out of their decaying bodies achieving some sort of permanent immortality. The Chinese regarded cicadas as symbols of rebirth as they would shed, (leaving the empty shell on a tree) and begin their adult lives in a new winged body.
