The Book of Christmas Carols offers a diverse selection of 19th-century period carols, folk-songs and lullabies well-known and less well-known, all beautifully illustrated with contemporary images, to be shared and sung in celebration of Christ’s birth. The selection includes over 50 carols – among them The Holy Well’, one of the loveliest folk-songs, ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ and ‘The Coventry Carol’ to be enjoyed and performed with family and friends as they have been for hundreds of years.

‘Carol’ comes from old French and is a type of song written and played as a courtly dancing song. Carols gradually assumed a more popular form. Telling stories and celebrating religious themes for all seasons until the late 19th century. When their present close association with Christmas became firmly established.
