Salish First Nation describe how the Madrona tree provided an anchor for their canoes to hold steady and not drift away, and according to the Great Flood legends of several bands in the northwest, the madrone helped people survive by providing an anchor on top of a mountain. Because of this the Saanich people do not burn Madrone out of thanks for saving them.

The Arbutus is Canada’s only native broad-leafed evergreen tree, and usually resides not farther than 8 km from the pounding waves of the Pacific ocean. Magnificent trees with a natural habit of twisting and turning to find the light, making them strongly associated with the sun and fire, symbolized the balance between light and dark. Known as the Tree of Knowledge, the Madrone knows how to find the light & how to survive even when the light becomes far too intense for most.

Hand picked off the ground by The Witch on her travels to BC, no trees were harmed in the harvesting of this product.
