Korali

Korali Necklaces are one of the oldest forms of women’s ornaments in Ukraine, they have many names (monysto, busy, korali). Testifying to their long history and important role in Ukrainian culture. Not only adornmentsThey carry deep symbolic significance. They were made of amber, metals, stones, corals, wood, leather, glass, etc. Generally protective or informative, one could tell how wealthy a family was with just a glance. Six strings of coral beads could cost as much as a pair of oxen.

In ancient times women adorned themselves with different beautiful and sometimes extravagant pieces of jewellery. Not only were they just pretty “baubles”, but they also had a special significance and many served as talismans and amulets. It was believed that these neck ornaments brought one fertility and protected from evil, magic spells and disease, and were also symbols of health and beauty. Women believed that misfortune would befall any person whose necklace thread broke and the beads scattered.
