Vesna
Vesna (Весна | Spring in Ukrainian) has been celebrated for thousands of years as the victory of Light over the Dark, Day over Night, Spring over Winter, the Return of the of Sun and the Resurrection of Spring. In The Slavic Myths beautiful women called “Vesnas” lived atop mountains. They discussed the fate of crops and of humans. Only certain people were capable of hearing them singing. Those who snuck up to their mountain might learn their fates, but risked an unpleasant end if they were caught.
The Vesna were female characters associated with youth and springtime. In early Slavic mythology rituals were conducted in rural areas during spring. In the 19th century, Russian peasants celebrated on March 1st. They would go to the fields, carrying a clay figure of a lark on a pivot which had been decorated with flowers. They sang songs naming the spring season Vesna. In Russian, Polish, Ukrainian and Belarusian languages vesna | wiosna is the actual word for spring. In Serbian, the word vesnik is used to denote someone who brings about springtime.
