The Heart is represented by an anatomically inaccurate shape. It is often used to represent affection and love, especially romantic love. This shape became fixed in Europe in the middle ages. It is sometimes accompanied by a “wounded heart”. This is depicted as a heart pierced with an arrow, indicating lovesickness, or as being “broken” into two or more pieces.
