The use of amulets and talismans in pagan antiquity was widespread throughout the world. Many monuments show objects of this kind being worn around the neck. This was done by all classes. The practice of wearing encolpia (small pectoral crosses), lent itself to abuses when magical formulas began to be joined to religious Christian symbols.
